Ton win down west

 Neyland 19 - Tonyrefail 42

Tonyrefail travelled to Neyland to play this third round WRU Bowl fixture and came away very happy with the performance they put in against a team who play above them in the WRU league system. There was, however, a down side in the form of a serious knee injury to centre Craig Keohane who broke his knee cap in two places.
The game began with the visitors having the benefit of a slope and it soon became apparent that their scrum was far stronger then than the home team's when they shunted Neyland backwards to give Ton the time and space to cross for a try which was duly converted. This stung Neyland into action and from the restart they pressured Ton keeping them in their own 22 before using a line out drive to touch down but this was to be their only score of the half. Ton were able to keep them well away from the try line with some aggressive defence while keeping the scoreboard ticking over with a further try and three penalty goals. The half ended with the score 5 - 21 and with Neyland having the slope in the second half Ton supporters were wondering if it would be enough.
The home side were quick off the mark to score a converted try three minutes after the re-start and they continued to press but hard tackling dislodged the ball which fell to Ton's fullback Sam Christopher and he ran seventy yards to touch down. From the restart Ton took the ball and ran it back at Neyland with some nice inter-passing for another converted try. With the visitors now enjoying a twenty three point lead it looked looked over and done but Ton then had two players yellow carded so were forced to defend the lead with thirteen men. Neyland took advantage to score another try on the hour but the visitors were to prove too tough a nut to crack and they prevented any further scoring. The injury then held up play for fifteen minutes but when it resumed with Ton back up to full strength they were able to cross for the final score of the game.
Ton can feel pleased with the result and performance with everyone committed to strong defence and they did not stop tackling throughout even when down to thirteen men. Hopefully they can carry this performance through to the league fixtures and move up the table.
Try scorers for Ton were Liam Roberts, Sam Christopher Alex Pugsley and Mitchel Jones with Owen Lewis kicking four conversions and three penalties.
