Ton v Glamorgan County

Tonyrefail RFC  10 - Glamorgan County 36

Tonyrefail RFC celebrate their 125th anniversary this year and as part of the ongoing celebrations they entertained Glamorgan County at Tylcha Fawr Park on their new playing surface.  The County team fielded a team with a nucleus of players from Div 2 side Nantyffyllon supported by others from Llanharan, Llantwit Major, Treorchy, Penygraig and Llantwit Fadre. A good crowd braved the miserable weather and the game began with the County on the front foot but Ton kept them away from the try line. The home side took an early lead with a penalty goal but from the restart County won possession and their forwards drove for the try line. Ton held out for a short period but the County's heavier forwards kept the ball tight and recycled it a few times before crossing for their first try. This set the patern for the remainder of the half as the visitors crossed for a further three tries, all from short range. Ton were living of scraps of possession but on the verge of half time they scored the best try of the game when full back Geraint Shalton fielded a kick inside his own 22 and he began to make ground. He chipped the ball over County's defensive line into space and had the pace to take it on the bounce and continue upfield. With the try line beckoning and the cover defence closing in it looked like he would be hauled down but a lovely off-load in the tackle got the ball away to a supporting runner to touch down under the posts. The conversion was on target and the half ended with the score 10-24.
In the second half Ton made some changes and they were more competitive up front and probably had the edge at the set scrums but with most of the County team playing three divisions above them it was hard graft all the way. The County team ran in another two tries but it was not a fair reflection of the efforts of the home team which included a number of young players from last season's youth side.
Ton may have lost the game but they can take heart from the number of players they have available compared with previous years when they have struggled. There were half a dozen of last seasons youth team avalable for this game and with some older, more experienced players returning things are looking promising.
