Ton v Old Penarthians

Tonyrefail got the season under way with a close fought win over Old Penarthians at their new field at Tylcha Fawr and although they led for most of the game a yellow card on the seventy minute mark made it much harder than it should have been as the visitors took full advantage of the extra man. Thankfully a disciplined defensive display kept the visitors away from the try line for the ten minutes of the card and the nine minutes of injury time that followed.
Ton started well and took play deep into Old Penarthian territory. With only four minutes gone they won good, off the top, line out ball and moved it quickly along the back line but the initial thrust was held. The home side recyled the ball quickly for Owen Lewis to cross for a try and then convert to give them an encouraging start. Play continued as both sides battled to gain the upper hard and although the visitors had the bigger pack they were matched by the home eight and play was confined to between the 22 metre lines until, on the half hour mark, the visitors took play into home territory with some neat interpassing before a speculative crossfield kick caught the Ton defence out of position and as the ball crossed the try line it was an Old Penarthian player who  got the touch down. The conversion was accurate and the scores were level.
In the last few minutes of the half Ton managed to gain a foothold in the visitors 22 and although they were unable to cross the try line a penalty from Owen Lewis gave them the lead again.
In the second half Ton had the slope in their favour and they started well but in spite of their territorial advantage they were only able to add to their score with two penalty goals from Owen Lewis. Things looked to be going Ton's way but on the hour mark Ton were slow to field a kick and the clearance attempt was charged down. The ball was quickly taken by the following Old Penarthian player who touched down close enough to the posts to make the convertion a formality. With the visitors now only two points adrift they upped their game but Ton seemed to be coping until the yellow card incident for a deliberate knock on. That handed the initiative to the visitors but although they came close they never crossed the try line and then missed a kickable penalty goal which would have given them the lead and possibly the win.
Ton supporters will be more than happy with the win but on occassions some of the team's play was a little naive when boot to ball would have been a better option than trying to run out of defence. Never the less a win is a win as they say.
Prominent for Ton were flanker Owain Davies, second row Rees Davies and centre James Shewring, starting his first senior game for Ton.
