Losing bonus point keeps Ton in third place.

                         Wattstown 20 - 14 Tonyrefail

Tonyrefail travelled the short distance up the valley for this Div.3 East Central B game to find the home side in determined mood and whilst it looked, at times, that Wattstown were going to steamroll Ton it was not to be and the visitors came away with a losing bonus point which keeps them in third place in the league.
The game began with Wattstown on the front foot and an early penalty gave them the lead but Ton were quick to reply when the home side offended at the restart for Garreg Lewis to put one over for the visitors. A few minutes later they took the lead with a lovely try by full back Alex Pugsley after the ball was quickly moved wide to wing Chris Rand who turned a would be tackler outside then in before give the ball to his team mate to touch down. Unfortunately for Ton this was to be the last time in the half that they got any meaningful possession and they were trapped in their 22 by Wattstown's forward dominated game.Unable to clear their line they were subjected to a constant battering by the home pack and in some ways it was creditable that they only conceded two tries during this period to finish the half 17 - 8 down.
In the second half Ton were more competitive with the backs having more of the ball but the referee's constant whistle meant they were unable to build any continuity and on the hour they had to settle for another Garreg Lewis penalty goal but,as they so often do after scoring, they conceded a penalty at the restart for Wattstown to add another three points to make the score 20-11. The game continued with Ton trying to play a wider game as Chris Rand and Sam Christopher had some good runs but they were unable to break the home defence and as the game drew to a close it looked like the chance of a point had gone but a successful penalty goal attempt by Garreg Lewis revived their hopes. With the game in injury time Wattstown went on the attack and they had the opportunity to cancel out Ton's bonus point with a penalty goal but the ball hit the post and Ton cleared the danger to end the game at 20-14.
Whilst Ton lost this game in the first half their second half performance was much improved and they limited Wattstown scoring to one penalty goal but the whole game was a stop, start affair thanks partly to the referee who seemed to need to speak to players at every infringement. Next week Ton are at home to new league leaders Cowbridge so things won't get any easier.
