Outweighed but not outmuscled

Tonyrefail 16 -  Caerau Ely 14

Tonyrefail took on fourth placed Caerau Ely on a day most supporters stayed at home because of the strong wind and driving rain but those that braved the elements were treated to a hard fought game of wet weather rugby, the result of which was in doubt until the final kick of the game. Ton were up against one of the biggest packs in the league on a day which suited their forward based driving game and in the first quarter Ton were never out of their half even though they had the wind at their backs. They were forced to tackle like demons as the visitors launched attack after attack but they were unable to break the home side's defence.
On the twenty minute mark Ton completely turned the tables on the Cardiff side when they had the put in at a scrum on their own ten metre line. A quick heel allowed scrum half Lewis Crabbe to break down the blind side before passing to inside to flanker Owain Davies who took play over the C/Ely 22metre line before he was tackled. Quick ball again from the ruck meant the visitors were caught out of position and the ball went across the back line for left wing Sam Christopher to cross in the corner giving Ton a 5-0 lead. This served to spur C/Ely and they were soon back in Ton territory to claim a push over try to give them the lead. Having survived the initial onslaught Ton were more competitive and they regained the lead with a penalty goal before half time.

With the score at 8-7 Ton were playing the second half into the ever increasing wind and driving rain and supporters probably thought it was going to be too much for them but another penalty goal stretched their lead to 11-7 before the visitors began to ramp up the pressure. A yellow card for Ton put them under the cosh and the almost inevitable try came a few minutes after. An accurate kick added the extras to make it 11-14 and it looked like the chance  of a win had gone. The Ton side were having none of it. They upped their game and as the rain became torrential they moved deep into C/Ely territory. With the carded player back on the field they pinned the visitors in the corner forcing a yellow card from the C/Ely side. Another big surge at a 5m scrum saw them score a push-over try with 3 minutes on the clock. All Ton had to do was field the kick-off and keep the ball for a few phases and kick it dead but that was not to be. A very kickable penalty award gave C/Ely the chance to snatch it at the death but as the ball was sent between the posts it suddenly dipped under the bar to gi e Ton a deserved win.
