Another hard fought win

    Tonyrefail 17 - Canton 3

Canton were the visitors to Tynybryn Park for this Div. 3 East Central B encounter and although they were three places above Ton in the league they found the home team too hard a nut to crack as they were limited to scoring only one penalty goal in the whole game.
With Canton unable to field a full front row the game was played with uncontested scrums through-out and the wet and slippery ground conditions meant handling would be difficult. Canton got their only score of the game after eight minutes and from then to the half time whistle the game was played almost entirely in their half of the field. Owen Lewis kicked a penalty for Ton to level but wrong decisions meant scoring chances were missed until hooker Gavin Enticott crossed after Ton drove from a close range line-out. Owen Lewis added the extras to make it 10 - 3 and although the home side continued to have the better of things they were unable to add to their score in the half.
In the second half Canton upped their game and kept Ton in their own half but whenever they got close to the try line they found Ton in determined mood with the whole team tackling for all they were worth. They kept the visitors out for twenty minutes and then managed to gain a foothold in Canton territory. The visitors made the mistake of trying to run the ball from inside their own half but pressure forced them to knock-on. Centre Garreg Lewis got his foot to the ball and fly kicked it forward for scrum half Alex Pugsley to win the race for the touch down under the posts. Owen Lewis added the two points and Ton were fourteen points clear but Canton were not detered and were soon back in Ton's half but they failed to break the home defence.
This was a good result and performance from Ton with the defensive aspect of their game coming to the fore again and with their next game against local rivals Penygraig they will need to perform in the same manner.
