Beaten but not bowed

  Ynysowen 18 - Tonyrefail 7

Tonyrefail travelled to the Taff valley for this Div. 3 East Central B to meet Ynysowen and they found the home team in determined mood in a game which saw two red cards for Tonyrefail and a red and two yellows for the home team after outbreaks of fighting.
The home side got off to a good start when their No8 drove from the back of a lineout on half way to take the ball deep into Ton's half before being hauled down. The much bigger Ynysowen pack were in close support and they recycled the ball quickly for their backs. Some quick passing saw them touch down in the corner for a try but they were unable to add the extras. They kept Ton under pressure for the following five minutes but the visitors began to settle and they started to get their own game going, taking play to the home try line. Ton got the ball over the try line but the referee adjudged that the ball was held up and they were unable to take advantage at the following five metre scrum before Ynysowen went upfield to kick a penalty to give them an 8-0 lead.
Ton were finding it difficult going against a much bigger pack but they made ground and were off target with two kickable penalties before loosing their influential outside half Geraint Shalton with an arm injury. This problem was compounded by a young referee who did not seem to know the difference between a prop standing up in the scrum and being driven up illegally by his opposite number and this resulted in penalties against Ton in most of the scrums giving Ynysowen the chance to clear any danger. Ton probably had the better of the half but they were unable to convert any pressure into points and the half ended 8-0 to the home team.
The second half began and neither side was able to get the upper hand but that changed after ten minutes when a Ton player was yellow carded by the referee. This quickly escalated to a second yellow and a red when the player made a comment to the referee. For Ton it meant that a difficult job was now almost impossible and they succumbed to a converted try on the hour mark. Things were slipping out of Ton's reach when a high tackle on their full back resulted in another bust up which saw a red card for a player from each side. A further penalty goal for Ynysowen virtually sealed the result but with the game in the eightieth minute they got the ball to the home line and kept it alive though numerous phases. After six minutes of continuous possession the visitors crashed over the line to score. The convertion was on target and the whistle ended the game.
It was evident from early on that Ton's pack was going to find it hard going but to their credit they worked hard thoughout and they got over the line in the end. Next week they are at home to Wattstown which will be another forward challenge.
